There are 3 Liliths in Astrology. There is the Dark Moon, Asteroid (1181), and Black Moon. What I’m writing about here is the latter. This symbolizes the moon's lunar apogee (its farthest point in orbit from Earth). If you’re interested in checking out where Black Moon Lilith is in your chart, ensure it is the True position rather than the Mean. Many Astrology websites use the Mean position, which can vary up to 30 degrees from the True and doesn’t accurately represent the energy
If you are familiar with the story of Adam and Eve, Lilith was in the picture before Eve showed up. Adam and Lilith were rolling right along, enjoying each other’s companionship until Adam insisted that Lilith be submissive to his sexual wishes. In Adam’s eyes, he was made of Earth and was pure, while Lilith was made of sediment and thus impure. Lilith knew this was not true and refused to play a subjugated role to Adam. She decided to go off on her own and leave Adam behind, living in a cave by the Red Sea. She lived authentically and enjoyed sexual freedom with other outcasts of society. In the absence of Lilith, Adam became lonely and asked God to fetch Lilith and have her return to him. Lilith refused, and because of this, she and her children were cursed and forced into a miserable existence. Eve was then created to provide Adam companionship. Eve was the submissive type that Adam was hoping for in Lilith.
Story and myth are used for social instruction. Eve represented the socially acceptable way for the feminine to respond to the masculine. As we sit here today, we are amid a rebalancing of the masculine and feminine within (not gender-specific), which I talked about in my article on Eris. This internal shifting that each of us undertakes contributes to the collective shift. Black Moon Lilith, Eris, and the asteroid Pallas symbolize the reclamation of the feminine in Astrology. These placements in your natal chart will show how you’ll be expressing what these archetypes represent in your life.
Black Moon Lilith symbolizes that “yes” or “no” response in your body to people, opportunities, relationships, situations, foods, environments…etc. It's that brain in your gut...your instinct. Let’s say you have BML in Gemini or the 3rd house. You may quickly “feel it” when someone says something that isn’t aligned with how they feel or isn’t true. Maybe you have BML in the 3rd house in Pisces. You may receive direct messages from your higher self/guides or channel messages for others.
Becoming fully aligned with your BML requires listening with your mind and body. When engaged in a conversation, notice how you feel inside while you listen. You may feel a slight sinking feeling in your stomach, which tells you something in that communication is not in sync with the words. Same when you are speaking. Maybe you say something that you feel is true, but once the words leave your mouth, you notice a sinking or uneasiness inside. While you read, stay connected with how your body feels. If it is accurate and important information for you, you’ll feel at ease and even possibly excited inside. Or maybe the info is correct, but just not something you need. Don’t dismiss the feeling, even if it doesn’t make sense. It’s also not something you need to “figure out” right away. Just notice that feeling and use it to guide you. “I’m not sure why but I feel something is off here. For that reason, I need to take this action.”
Maybe you’re introduced to something new (a person, situation, or opportunity) where logically it may not make sense that you would be interested, but you notice a surprising feeling of excitement or lightness inside. Engaging with this person, situation, or opportunity may present an experience that your mind could not conceive.
Next time you head to the grocery store, hold whatever you are about to buy in your hands and say to yourself… “Is this good for me?”. Pay attention to your body’s response. You may be surprised. Even if you are holding a bundle of fresh carrots, your body may say “no.” The body’s needs constantly change and communicate with you. Rather than eating foods that you’ve been told are good for you, work with letting your body tell you what it needs. Maybe you love the taste of a particular food that is not good for your body. Satisfying your taste buds, but once it’s past your mouth, your body is saying… ”What the heck are you doing to me!?” This one can be difficult. I’m familiar… those iced mochas were a daily staple for me for a long time ;).
Once you begin to listen to your body consistently, the response will amplify, getting to the point where it becomes impossible to ignore. Then your logic can kick in to navigate how to interact, react or respond. Going back to my daily iced mocha habit, I started to get heartburn as soon as I took a sip which was a clear sign from my body that stuff had to go!
Lilith is also connected to sexual desire. It also speaks to honoring your own needs and working on removing any limiting beliefs, feelings of obligation, guilt, or shame. Being fully transparent with yourself and others on your needs allows that authenticity to navigate which relationships you participate in and those you don't. This may not always be an easy thing to do if you are used to placing more importance on the needs of others or simply not realizing the fact you have needs of your own. Once your desires are understood, communicated, and met with partners at this level, not only will you become fulfilled but are an example for others on what embracing their own Black Moon Lilith could look like.
Those with a prominent Black Moon Lilith in their chart (i.e., BML in the first house or conjunct or trine the Sun) can be trailblazers on how to follow instinct and intuition. They can feel non-authenticity a mile away and won't stand for it. Often, they will receive plenty of projections, pushback, and resistance from others who have conditioned limiting beliefs or are rejecting parts of themselves. That said, they pay no mind and keep on walking towards that Red Sea ;)
Getting deeply in tune with what your body is telling you can bring up some situations that may require you to be bold and shake things up in your world. Maybe re-examining your belief systems, relationships, career, or activities you’ve been involved in.
The Lilith way of being is called for at this time. Engaging only with people and things essential for you to thrive, doing what brings joy and fulfillment, and consciously existing and collaborating with nature. Instead of the exile and difficult existence portrayed in that story, it will help pave the way for living your most authentic existence and raising the collective consciousness of our planet.
All the best,
Keith
